Initial proposals - Jin

I've got two initial proposals for fmp.

1. There have been a more devices recently which have tried to humanise the functions which digital technology has provided. The iPhone and Nintendo Wii, for example, have physicalised organising and gaming so that anyone can use them instinctively. So in a similar way, I want to make something which will allow you to make sound instinctively. It will be a device which will automatically produce sound from coloured markings that you draw on a strip of paper. It will allow users to play and experiment with the relationship between colour, movement and sound. But in this case, the content is also new whereas the content of iPhone and Wii are not. It could simply be a programme using your laptop and webcam or it could be developed into a self-contained device. The target audience could be those who love 'cultural creatives'

2. Computer applications as experimental tools, I’m aiming to collect their errors to produce unique work in which all the movements and effects can only be produced by their flaws and faults. A collection of work will show the practical uses of all kind of application errors such as Flash and Photoshop. It could be developed into a website.

Hi Jin,

I definately like your second idea more. Your first one sounds a little too experimental and seems a little fine arty. Perhaps im not understanding it correctly, but assuming you do end up with a program that can translate marks on a paper into sound, theres this element of 'randomness' and unpredictability to what it spits out, that seems very much like a sound/art/interactive installation.

Just my opinion.

As for your second idea. I find it pretty interesting and i can definately relate to it. You certainly wont have any shortage of material to work with.

But on some level i feel that it needs a bit more of a structure or reasoning behind it. Rather than just a random compilation of error messages from different programs. I also dont necessarily think that it has to be a website, unless you have more of a reason for it to be one.

Dont know how youd get around that, but id be interested in hearing a more developed idea on the subject.

Hope that helps in some way.
Good luck!

I problem I think with some of your ideas is that I'm sure they will be brilliant in the end at the show but until they are finished I'm sure few people understand them! I think with FMPs its really important for everyone to get the idea through out the project, most importantly the examiner and Geoff! So the simpler second ideas sounds more appealing.
