1- Do some promotional work for an up and coming event, a sports event like the world cup would be right up my street, but unrealistic! You get the idea though.
2- An illustrated book on football chants. Also, for the show I would create an installation, which would consist of a small row of stadium seats with speakers and sound, to create a stadium atmosphere to sit and view the book.

Hey Patrick,
I really like the idea of creating a small stadium seat area in the show-which could serve beers and hot dogs... Also i think the book should have more than just chants - maybe great football moments -maybe there could be an edited DVD inside the book of the great moments in football (not sure about rights etc.. you'll have to check that one out) maybe a sticker book(?) the world cup idea is also great but you'd have to get in touch with the advertising agency in charge of the promotion-maybe find out who they are and contact them and tell them you'd love to work with them...(?)
You've got nothing to lose!!

You could buy tickets for the rest of the season and follow one particular club fighting for promotion/relegation (that has a strong support) and document the lives of the fans around that, rather than focus on just the chants.
Leeds?
Sheffield Weds?
Notts Forest?
MK Dons (would be good example considering recent history)?
Aldershot: brilliant example (1-dissolved in 1992 and reformed by supporters who worked their way back up to the Conference, currently top, 2-very cheap tickets, 3-hardcore supporters)
Possible Problems:
- would it work better as an essay? (the history and origins of chants are more interesting than the chants themselves).
- danger of it becoming one of those £3 books at the Waterstones checkout that everyone chuckles at but immediately forgets.
- it hinges entirely on the book design and how relevant that is, rather than the seating plan/music idea.

No installations!!!!
We are not a fine art course.
1'm drawn and warming to the football anthem 'SONG BOOK', but to say that this is just an illustrated book at this point is too prescriptive...and in real world terms could be done in a couple of weeks.
Tracing anthems, who instigated/invented them...how they spread etc...is big part. How you record them editorially is also challenge. The ultimate 'goal' would have to be getting a premier division crowd to sing an anthen that you have written- and record it...now that would be impressive!!

Response to Geoff's chant idea:
-could you get an entire stand of fans (entire side of one stadium) to wear shirts and become human pixels for one match? Hold up coloured boards?
Could get the whole stadium to do it and spell out 4 words.

!!!
Chant idea would be tough as most chants end up being nothing more than 'your support is fucking shit'
I had a friend who, during an England qualifier, once got an entire pub of deadly serious fans to sing 'ROONEY IS A LUCKY, LUCKY BOY, A VERY LUCKY BOY' for no reason at all.
