James Housego - FMP idea

Typography is becoming more and more of a design consideration when it comes to the designing of football shirts, since the addition of player’s names in the 1992/1993 season. I propose to design a football font, which could appear on the team shirts. I plan to look at the possibility of designing a full kit to include my new typeface, as well as looking into the designing of individual clubs fonts.

It has always interested me when I see supporters wearing shirts with random team players names and numbers on the back of their shirts. When I went skiing in Bulgaria over Christmas, I was at the top of the mountain and the man working at the cafe appeared wearing a Chelsea shirt with the name Lampard and the number 8 on the back! Football shirts are big business with clubs bringing out new ones practically every season. I propose to design and make a new football kit, looking at football fonts and numbering (creating my own football font), branding, sponsors, logos and styles.

It would be good to harness your natural enthusiasm for sport and include these in a FMP, however the design of a font, regardless of the enthusiasm by which you present it is lacking the substance of a double module.

I am also sure tht there would be licensing, manufacturing obsticles to face. Moreover, it may well be that your concepts falls into the 'if it aint broke why fix it' catagorie?
