Laura Pearl- another idea

Make the Ordinary Extraordinary

We have to use things every day that are boring and unexciting, I would like to make the ordinary things that we use so beautiful that they make the user want to save and keep them/think twice before using them. i keep things that i find exciting and beautiful, like a label or a ticket, but what about making a tea bag/sugar cube/tampon/toilet roll/ rizzla/ the top of the unused butter etc so special that we savour and appriciate them.

Another idea (but a bit of a bracketed one because i worry about its orginality) is making celebration cakes (really really ornate ones) for occasions that don't warrent a celebration, eg spending a huge amount of money on new shoes/breaking a plate (one that belonged to your gran)/ deleting your harddrive etc. I would like to design/make the cakes/ photograph them (for some kind of print response (cards catalogue etc) and market them...This is idea has come from the fact that i am enthusiastic about everything (probable way too enthusiastic) but I worry about its durability.. hmm

What I like about the ideas is that you're picking up on the "getting-excited-about-everything (or most things)" quality that you have which will help sustain your interest in the projects.

In terms of idea two and making a celebration about of non-celebrations I think someone re-designed a whole load of greeting cards that said things similar but I guess it's never been said through a cake... but as you said... will have to see if this original enough.

I like the fact that in idea one, it will almost be a celebration about how YOU see things. I can envisage really beautiful packaging designs around these objects glorifying the norm and making us see things differently.

Just some thoughts.

All the very best, Lisa x

Hi Laura, I like the first idea but I found an article in the recent publication(I think it was Graphik...not sure)that deals with the same idea, I think it was called customization. Basically, A range of designers were interviewed alongside photographs of their work relating to transforming the mundane/uninteresting/ everyday objects in a unique and beautiful way. I still think this idea could be developed further tho, maybe from another angle? I like the second idea, The cakes would have to be huge though, so everyone can have a slice!
