Tim Henry

Hi gang,

I've been taking my time thinking long and hard about project concepts. Here are 2 that I would like you're reactions to pronto. Cheers. T

1.How the Hell did that get made!?

I am frequently stunned and amused by badly designed products and graphics. I find myself desperately wanting to know who was responsible and why they made the choices they did, and who gave their design the green light to go public?
I therefore propose a project where I act, effectively, as a detective and track down individuals responsible for these ‘design crimes’ and interrogate them about their choices and motives. I believe the documentation of my detective work and subsequent interviews could form the basis of an interesting project. What do you think? Please give me your comments and suggestions asap and feel free to be as critical as you want.

2.Every Stop

Although we all live in London we all tend to stick to well worn routes and areas and in fact only see a minority of the city we live in. For example: the area around College, the area where we live, Central, and perhaps the areas around the major galleries. But besides that there is a vast majority of London that we tend to never see in our average weekly lives, or even never at all. I have been thinking about how I could take these thoughts and translate them into a project and I think I have the start of something potentially very interesting. The idea is to go to every stop on the London underground map. All, get this, 275 of them! I think there’s definitely an interesting hook to hearing that a person has been to every stop but the question now is how would I take it forward into being a project with an interesting piece of design or communication at the conclusion? Please can you give me your thoughts asap?

I prepared this supporting image as a visual aid to my point. This is my average weekly tube map.

I like the visuals of the 2nd one but it seems a little to similar to that D&AD winner from last year who created a map of where he normally went in a week.

The 1st one is nice but so long as it shows your strengths. I fear it could easily become another manual and therefore rely on layout skills.

I feel like you always come up with crazy, original and witty ideas, and these don't sound like you at all... although I do like your first idea, I must agree with the first post... it will only be layout... but it definitely has potential to be brought further...
I also think that we should be doing something that is positive, that shows our skills and our positive energy for these FMPs...
don't know if this helps...

I think the first one definitely has wit as i'd be investigating terrible designs. A big problem is that I don't really know what my practical strengths are besides coming up with ''ideas for stuff''. I definitely think I'm more of an advertising creative than a graphic designer.

HI Tim, i quite like your fist idea but you run the risk of turning half the design industry against you. More importantly, I think you would have to feature key famous bad pieces of design to give the project true weight, my first thought is the 2012 Olympics logo. Thatll be Wolf Olins and with a company of that size and prestige I dont think you want to annoy them. ALSO there is an article on the creative review website about the logo with wolf olins and when you read it you can really understand the reasons why they did it. I would suggest that things are not as simple or shallow as they may seem aesthetically.

second one is a bit cliché!

Tim,

Check out the Creative Review blog, they posted a piss-take article today surrounding new bubbly logo design trends, weird gradients and 3D geometric shapes (just like Grapher on the Mac) - this seems like a smarter road to go down than a blatant logo crit.
Thoughts:

- "Bad" sometimes = good...
Schools can't get enough of Comic Sans.

- sometimes = charming...
at least it's honest
(they're trying to modernise Southend seafront right now by getting rid of the brilliantly bad "DOUGNUT" and "ICE CREME" signs and putting in shiny Canary-Wharf-a-like sculptures and just fucking it all up).
They also replaced a nearby pet shop sign recently and its a shame. It was a beautiful intricate handpainted sign for a pet shop that had the typo "The Fishey Buisness"
